He also played Sheriff Jack Haines in "The Werewolf" (1956) and Captain Kenneth Cragis in "The Creation of the Humanoids" (1962). In Westerns, he appeared as William Travis in "Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier" (1955) and had roles in "The Great Locomotive Chase" (1956) and "The Devil's Brigade" (1968). On television, Megowan starred alongside Cameron Mitchell in the 1962 series "The Beachcomber" and made guest appearances in various Westerns, including "Gunsmoke, " "Wagon Train, " "The Rifleman, " and Bonanza.
Don Megowan appeared in the "Gunsmoke" episode titled "Big Tom, " which aired in 1960. In this episode, he portrayed Tom Burr, a former prizefighter with a serious heart condition who is determined to fight a vicious opponent named Hob Creel. Additionally, Megowan appeared in other episodes of "Gunsmoke, " portraying characters such as Mike, Michael, Lolo Grimes, Lucas, and Creel. A longtime smoker, Megowan died of throat cancer at the age of 59. He is interred in Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, California. This is an ORIGINAL contract between Don Megowan and The Arness Production Company for one of his three appearances on the show, Gunsmoke. This particular contract was for his appearance in'Phoebe Strunk' where he played the role of Oliver Strunk. For over 60 years, this contact remained in the possession and home of James Arness. Today, it can reside in your memorabilia shrine!
